Where the Wild Things Are

So... there's not much else out in theaters besides scary movies because it is Halloween but if you want something more than just your run of the mill romantic comedy, then check out Where the Wild Things Are. Directed by Spike Jonez, Where the Wild Things Are is a cinematically beautiful movie. The characters and costumes are amazing and it definitely brings back fond memories of reading the children's book by Maurice Sendak. The kid who plays Max (ironically also named Max) is adorable and gives a broken and haunting performance. Famous names such as Catherine O'Hara (Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas) and others provide the voices for Max's "Wild Things", KW, Carol, Alex, Judith, Ira, Douglas, and the Bull. Be warned that this is not really a kid's movie...parts are scary and boring for children so don't take any little siblings. I walked out of the movie with mixed thoughts. It wasn't happy... and yet it was. It made me think about life; how nice I was to my brother and my parents, among other things. The entire story including the wild things is a metaphor for Max's life. Figuring out who everyone is during the movie is the funnest part! See it if you want a thought provoking and aesthetically beautiful movie with a great soundtrack... (Karen O and the Kids...excellent!) xo
